Decorating with black accent furniture does not mean taking things to much to the extreme. Dark hues are a favorite color for so many of us in our drawers and closets and is a go-to color for many fashionistas, so there are certainly ways to incorporate black into your furniture and accent pieces that will not make your home too gloomy. Note, though, that the following tips can also apply to any dark hue like oxblood, plum or navy.
Be unexpected. Add black in some the less obvious spaces, like creating an elegant kitchen with black cabinets and stainless steel fixtures. This would be the perfect idea as black hides stains, dirt and scratches better than any other color. Pair it with metal and white, black should be kept from soaking up too much light.
Define the trim. A touch of black can really go a long way, creating a crisp and linear look. Think of it like framing a piece of art where everything looks better and more polished. Black in a distant room creates a sense of dimension and depth that draws the eye to it.
Go monochrome. If you are going with a black and white theme, pops of black would be great on furniture and built ins, helping the aesthetics pop against bland textures and stark whites. Take for example the Mirrored Chest with Matte Black Accents by Howard Elliott.
Pick focal points. Anything within space that has a specific feature, shape or look can be ten times more impactful when implemented in black. For instance, classic wingback chairs might already make a strong statement; but pairing it with a cut velvet fabric with nailhead trim makes it more than just a piece of furniture.
Create an all-black bed. A bed covered in all black screams sexy. If you want a dreamy and dark space, an all-black bed ensemble would be the perfect spot to start. Incorporate rich fabrics and great textures for a seductive space. And then add pillow accents like the Glamour Girl Throw Pillow by Twinkle Living.
Look to the floor. When your regular cherry, oak or walnut finish will not do, black floors can create a canvas for your furnishings, allowing your providing a sharp contrast with your accents against such bold floors. Pairing rugs with ebony floors makes it all the more beautiful. Metals will look cleaner and the floor will look brand new. The Puzzle Rug by Twinkle Living should be perfect.
Create illusions. In smaller and more impactful rooms of your house, a trompe l’oeil can make a big statement. Extend your wall color to a surface and contrast the trim to draw the eyes on architectural detailing or display items. It is subtle but creates a kind of depth that makes the area appear larger and less full.
Black is very chic. When it is applied to your interiors in the right way, your home can look all pretty and polished. It is also versatile as well. black can be played down, dressed up, softened with foliage or made masculine with the addition of metals and woods.
